I will be offering two different courses this fall – the Fundamentals of Drawing course which is an introductory course teaching basic drawing techniques, and the Drawing in Color course which will teach colored pencil techniques and assumes students are already comfortable with basic drawing skills.
You are welcome to take both courses simultaneously if you want to reinforce basic drawing skills, but feel comfortable enough to want to add in the challenge of color considerations, but if you are new to drawing, I’d recommend completing the fundamentals course before taking the color course.
Open to adults and youth ages 12 and up (exceptions may be possible with special permission)
Both classes will be held as weekly group courses (up to 12 students in each group) of 1.5 hour sessions each week. Classes will be held at the Chymiak Linen Mill (the former Vessell’s Fitness building), 1910 N. Elm, Rolla, MO (map at the bottom of the page)

Fundamentals of Drawing - 8 Lesson course
This course is an introduction to techniques you can use to develop your drawing skills. It is appropriate for beginners or for those who have self taught drawing skills, but would like to learn more techniques and exercises that can help you improve.
Topics covered include contour drawing, shading, light/shadow fundamentals, one and two point perspective, gridding, sighting, and negative space.
Classes will run from Oct 14 through Dec 9 (break for thanksgiving week) with Dec 16 as a makeup day option in case of a snow day or other unplanned class cancellation.
2 time slots offered: 2:00-3:30pm and 4-5:30pm (both on Wednesdays)
Total cost to be paid up front. Costs are divided into lessons themselves and art materials, which you can choose to purchase as a kit from me or supply your own materials.
Lesson:
$12.50/lesson x 8 = $100/person for adults.
35% discount for youth (18 and under) = $65/youth
Basic drawing kit: $20
– includes 9″x12″ sketchbook, graphite/charcoal pencil set in range of hardness (2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, Ebony, and White Charcoal), eraser, sharpener, 6″ ruler, and fine tipped pen. You can optionally choose to provide these items yourself if you already have them.
Drawing in Color - 8 Lesson course
This course teaches colored pencil drawing techniques. Students are expected to already be comfortable with basic drawing and shading skills.
Topics covered include basic color theory concepts, color layering, burnishing, impressed line techniques, context effects on color perception, color in light/shadow.
Classes will run from Oct 19 through Dec 14 (break for thanksgiving week) with Dec 21 as a makeup day option in case of a snow day or other unplanned class cancellation.
1 time slot offered: 4-5:30pm Mondays (If this time does not work for you and you are interested – contact me with a suggested time and I might consider adding a second time slot)
Total cost to be paid up front. Lesson costs are required, and you can either purchase art materials from me (I’ve tried to source the best value possible for you) or if you already have provide them yourself:
Lesson:
$12.50/lesson x 8 = $100/person for adults.
35% discount for youth (18 and under) = $65/youth
You will also need materials. I’ve divided these into a sketch kit (recommended for every student to have their own), and a colored pencil kit. (these are supplies that could potentially be shared within a family if budget is tight, though each student will want to have access to them during the week for homework assignments) If providing your own materials instead of purchasing kits from me, I recommend prismacolor premier colored pencils, and would suggest at minimum the 24 color set.
Sketch kit: $12.50
– includes 9″x12″ colored pencil drawing pad, graphite pencil, vinyl eraser
Colored pencil kit: $35
– includes prismacolor premier colored pencil set (at minimum a 24 color set, though I have acquired a number of 36 color sets at significant discount, so will be including those for students who register and purchase the colored pencil kit until they run out), prismacolor sharpener, kneaded eraser, colorless blender pencil.
